Microsoft hasn’t yet released Windows 11. Currently, it is only available for Windows Insider Program members and developers. But understandably there are a lot of people out there who are very excited about it and can’t wait to try it out. Cyber-criminals have obviously jumped in on the opportunity and floated several malware-riddled fake installers in the guise of Windows 11 targeting unsuspecting users.

How scammers fool Windows 11 Downloaders?

The most straightforward way cyber-criminals deceive users is by slipping in something extra. One method involves an executable file called 86307_windows 11 build 21996.1 x64 + activator.exe. Based on the filename, one might guess that it includes Windows 11 build 21996.1 and on top of that there’s an activator. It comes in at 1.75GB, so for some people, that might seem reasonable. It starts out looking like a normal installer until you understand what it actually does.

Opening the executable starts the installer, which looks like an ordinary Windows installation wizard. Its main purpose is to download and run another, more interesting executable. And then there’s a second installer that calls itself a download manager. It also comes with license agreement (which few people read) calling it a “download manager for 86307_windows 11 build 21996.1 x64 + activator” and noting that it would also install some sponsored software. One you accept that nonsense agreement, a variety of malwares will be installed on your machine.

Malware can be anything from adware to a Trojan virus. Adware usually isn’t super dangerous. It’s just malware that’s meant to inject your PC with advertisements. Viruses can be more of an issue, and they can be harder to get rid of if your machine is infected.

How to Safeguard from being a Victim?

For those that want Windows 11, just enroll your PC in the Windows Insider Program. If you really want an ISO, just wait a little while and Microsoft will make them available. If you can’t wait, use UUP Dump. And if your PC isn’t supported, keep in mind that Windows 10 is still supported until late 2025.

To avoid such misadventures, it is recommended that users download Windows 11 from official sources only, as Microsoft advises. So be smart about where you find your software and make sure your antivirus software is up to date at all times. Don’t let the shadowy side of the internet make a victim out of you.
