You might have seen multiple pranks on WhatsApp. The latest one to the list is a message, pressing on which will freeze your application for a while.

Like other message bombs, the messages in the WhatsApp that freezes are the symbols between spaces. If you tap on part of the text, the app will try to “expand” these symbols, which could cause the app to overload or even crash your entire operating system. Thus far, at least two variations of the message bomb in WhatsApp have been identified — there’s one with a black dot that literally warns recipients of what will happen if you tap on it (and apparently, folks are still doing just that). The other says, “This is very interesting” with an emoji of a laughing face, though it’s unlikely you’ll be laughing once you click on it.

In short, the prank message exceeds the character/word limit. As most of the characters are hidden, you won’t get any issues on receiving it. On the other hand, trying to tap on it forces WhatsApp to process the whole text beyond its control. That’s how you end up seeing not responding notice.

Those who have received this WhatsApp message and eventually fell for it, out of a deliberate action, need not worry as the message seems like a harmless prank that your friends would play. However, it is advised that if you are aware of the repercussions of tapping on the jokey WhatsApp message, you should not deliberately “touch” any part of the message.

Well, we have carried out a small investigation on it and here’s what we found:

1. We copied the message and converted the text to ASCII code

2. We checked the number of characters and number of words in the message. As you can see in the screenshot, a simple don’t touch here message contained about 23703 characters / 5926 words hidden in it.
