Fix “Sorry, this media file doesn’t exist on your SD card/internal storage”

Posted

WhatsApp now has become an integral part of our lives. We use WhatsApp everyday prominently to share text messages, images and videos. The images and videos that we send on WhatsApp vanish from the WhatsApp server once the end user downloads them. Sometimes, when you try to access an image or a video, you may see an error, ‘Sorry, this media file doesn’t exist on your SD Card/Internal Storage’. Those files are blurred and appear to be missing for no reason.

WhatsApp Media File Doesn't Exists on Your Internal Storage

Method 1. Copy the Missing Media files to the Original WhatsApp Folder

All the media files like images and videos sent to you on your WhatsApp messenger are auto saved in Gallery under the WhatsApp folder by default. Sometimes, due to a shortage of space, you may decide to move all the photos and videos from the WhatsApp folder to the external SD Card or some other location.

In WhatsApp, you can only view the media files which are present in the WhatsApp folder. If you try to view an image or a video which is not present in the location recognized by the app, you will just see a blurred image followed by the message, ‘Sorry, this media file doesn’t exist on your internal storage.

To correct it, find the missing images and videos in the gallery and then, copy and paste them into the WhatsApp folder. After you have done that, try again to open those media files in WhatsApp. You will be surprised to find that the problem has been resolved successfully.

Method 2. Reinstall App and Restore from Backup

Sometimes, it may happen that the file you are trying to access is either deleted or corrupted. In such cases, the WhatsApp application may show you the same error. WhatsApp backs up your messages, images and videos (optionally) on your Google Drive(on an Android smartphone) on a daily basis (frequency can be changed from the Settings).

WhatsApp Chat Backup Restore

If you have accidentally deleted a photo or a video and wish to recover it, all you need to do is first uninstall the app and then reinstall it. Once you install the app, you are provided with an option to restore data from previous backups. It will re-download all the WhatsApp media files saved in the cloud backups and save them back to your device.

Note: If you haven’t created backups of the images beforehand (Settings -> Chats -> Chat Backup), you may not be able to recover them using this method.

Method 3. Recover the Missing WhatsApp Media Files without Backup

If you don’t have a backup of the files, then you can use some Recovery Tools to recover image/video from your local storage (android device).

Here are a few recovery tools you can use.

  1. Recuva
  2. Jihosoft Android Phone Recovery
  3. Remo Recover for Android
  4. MyJad Android data recovery
  5. fone – Recover (Android Data Recovery)
